Waiting on God sounds noble in a sermon, but it often feels like an emotional tug-of-war in real life. The “meantime” — that space between the promise and the fulfillment — is rarely glamorous. It’s where we wrestle with uncertainty, question our decisions, and sometimes even question God.
Let’s be honest: trusting God is not always peaceful. It can be exhausting.
When Faith Feels Like a Fight
You’ve prayed. You’ve fasted. You’ve obeyed the last instruction. And still… nothing seems to be moving.
This is the meantime.
It’s the space where you’re trying to stand in faith, but your emotions are all over the place. One day, you’re full of confidence. The next, you’re drowning in doubt. One hour, you’re singing praises. The next, you’re silently wondering, “God, did I hear You right?”
Even Jesus, in His humanity, felt the tension of trusting God’s plan while facing pain: “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46). Trusting doesn’t mean you won’t feel. It means you choose to believe even when you do.
The Weight of Obedience
What no one tells you about obedience is that it costs something emotionally. It costs your comfort. It costs your pride. It costs your illusion of control.
And sometimes, obedience leads you into deeper unknowns before the promise becomes visible. Like Abraham, you may have to leave your familiar without all the details. Like Joseph, you may end up in a pit before you get to the palace. The meantime is where your heart can grow weary from doing good — especially when you don’t see the harvest… yet.
What To Do With the Emotional Toll
- Acknowledge It
You’re not crazy. You’re not weak. You’re not lacking faith. You are human. And the emotional fatigue you feel is real. Name it. Don’t suppress it. David cried out. Elijah sat under a tree and said, “I’ve had enough.” God didn’t rebuke them — He responded. - Process It in His Presence
The meantime is when intimacy with God becomes necessary, not optional. Don’t just “wait on God” — meet with God. Journal. Cry. Worship. Sit in silence. Let Him minister to your tired soul. - Guard Against Bitterness
Unprocessed delay can become fertile ground for bitterness. Be mindful. Trusting God doesn’t mean ignoring your disappointment — it means bringing it to Him before it turns into resentment. - Lean Into Community
Isolation will lie to you. The enemy loves to attack in silence. Surround yourself with voices of truth, prayer partners, and safe spaces that can hold you up when you’re tired of holding on.
There’s Glory in the Meantime
Yes, it’s emotionally taxing. Yes, it’s spiritually stretching. But the meantime is where your roots grow deep. It’s where your trust matures. It’s where your soul is refined to hold the weight of what you prayed for.
Isaiah 40:31 says: “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength…” — not those who worry, not those who strive, but those who wait.
So if you’re in the meantime right now, this is your reminder: You’re not alone. And your emotions don’t disqualify your faith — they reveal your humanity.
Hold on. Heaven sees you. And God still honors those who trust Him, especially when it costs.
